New York State vs New York City: what actually changes
There is no separate New York State payroll tax. State income tax is withheld from the same paycheck that federal tax is withheld from, on the same New York taxable income figure. The only structural difference between living in the city and living elsewhere in the state is one extra local layer.

What the NYC resident layer costs at common salaries
Both columns use a single filer, standard deductions, no pre-tax contributions and bi-weekly pay. The gap is the New York City resident tax and nothing else.

2026 New York State income tax rates, single filer
New York State tax is applied to income after the $8,000 single standard deduction. The federal brackets are separate: they start from the $16,100 federal standard deduction.
| New York taxable income | State rate | NYC resident rate |
|---|---|---|
| First $8,500 | 3.9% | 3.078% |
| $8,500 – $11,700 | 4.4% | 3.762% |
| $11,700 – $13,900 | 5.15% | 3.819% |

| $80,650 – $215,400 | 5.9% | 3.876% |
| $215,400 – $1,077,550 | 6.85% | 3.876% |
| $1,077,550 – $5,000,000 | 9.65% | 3.876% |
| $5,000,000 – $25,000,000 | 10.3% | 3.876% |
| Over $25,000,000 | 10.9% | 3.876% |
The top state rate applies above $25 million of taxable income. New York City resident tax tops out at 3.876%, which is why the city column flattens early.
Living or working across the state line
If you live in New Jersey or Connecticut and work in New York, New York taxes your New York wages and your home state generally gives you a credit for the tax you paid. That usually means no double tax, but it also means you cannot simply compare the two state rates.
New York State paycheck questions
Do I pay New York State tax if I live outside New York City?+−
Yes. New York State income tax applies to anyone who lives in New York or works in New York, including Long Island, Westchester and upstate residents. What changes is the New York City resident tax, which is an extra local layer that only applies to people who live in the five boroughs.
How much more does someone in NYC take home than someone upstate?+−
The difference is the NYC resident tax, which runs from 3.078% to 3.876% of New York taxable income. On a $100,000 salary that is roughly $3,000 a year, or about $115 per bi-weekly check. The federal, New York State and FICA layers are identical in both cases.
I live in New Jersey or Connecticut and work in NYC. Which calculator do I use?+−
Use this one. New York taxes your New York wages, so the state calculation applies, but your New York City resident tax is normally zero because you do not live in the city. Your home state may also tax the income and give you a credit for the New York tax paid, which is covered in our commuter guides.
What if I work in NYC but live upstate or on Long Island?+−
The New York City resident tax is based on where you live, not where you work. Living outside the five boroughs means the city layer does not apply to your wages, even if your office is in Manhattan. Use the New York City resident option in the calculator above only if you actually live in the city.
Which 2026 figures does this calculator use?+−
The IRS 2026 federal brackets and standard deduction, New York State's 2026 brackets and standard deduction, the $184,500 Social Security wage base, and Medicare plus Additional Medicare Tax. The full order of operations is on the methodology page.
