About NYC Paycheck Calculator
A free, single-purpose tool that answers one question well: if you earn a salary and live in New York City, how much of it actually reaches your bank account in 2026?

What this site does
Most salary calculators tell you a number and stop. New York City paychecks are unusual because four separate tax systems reach into the same wage: federal income tax, New York State income tax, New York City resident income tax, and FICA payroll taxes. Two workers on the same gross salary in different filing situations can end up hundreds of dollars apart every month.
This calculator separates each of those layers so you can see the working behind the estimate, change one variable at a time, and compare a job offer against your current pay without handing your salary to a signup form. Every calculation runs inside your own browser.
Who publishes this site
NYC Paycheck Calculator is built and maintained by the NYC Paycheck Calculator Team, an independent editorial team that publishes payroll-tax estimates and plain-language explainers for New Yorkers. The team writes the guides, checks the rate tables against primary sources, and answers reader corrections.
We are not a tax preparation firm, an accounting practice, a payroll provider, or a financial adviser. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the IRS, New York State, the New York City Department of Finance, or any other government body.
How the calculator is built
The estimate calculates your annual liability first and then allocates it across your chosen pay schedule. Annual-first math keeps salary comparisons honest, because changing your pay frequency should not change your annual tax.
- 1Apply eligible pre-tax contributions to income-tax wages.
- 2Subtract the 2026 federal and New York standard deductions.
- 3Run taxable income through progressive federal, state, and city brackets.
- 4Add Social Security, Medicare, and Additional Medicare Tax when applicable.
- 5Subtract taxes and contributions from gross pay, then divide by pay periods.
Primary sources behind every rate
None of the rates in this calculator are estimated or modelled. Each one is taken from a published government source, and each guide page links back to the source it relies on.
What the estimate deliberately leaves out
A calculator that quietly guesses at the complicated cases is worse than one that admits its edges. These are outside the current model:
- Itemized deductions and non-standard filings
- Dependents, credits, and alternative minimum tax
- Bonuses, commissions, equity, and self-employment income
- Multiple jobs, mid-year salary changes, and partial-year residency
- Garnishments, union dues, and employer-specific benefits
- New York's high-income recapture and other surtax calculations
Editorial standards
Traceable figures.
Every rate and threshold on this site comes from a linked primary source published by the IRS, the Social Security Administration, New York State, or the City of New York. We do not cite aggregator blogs as authorities.
Reviewed on a schedule, not on a whim.
The calculator's assumptions and every guide are reviewed whenever a figure changes, and at minimum before each tax year begins. Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed.
Corrections are welcome and get priority.
If a rate is wrong or out of date, email [email protected] with the figure and the source you are comparing against. Corrections are checked against the primary source and published as soon as they are verified.
No paid placements.
The site carries no advertising, no affiliate links, and no sponsored content. No company can pay to appear in a guide, and nothing on the site is written to favour a payroll provider.
One clear boundary.
We publish estimates and explanations, not advice about your individual tax position. Anything that depends on your full return belongs with a qualified tax professional.

The short version
Free to use, no account, no email required, no data collected. Built by an independent team, sourced to official tables, and explicit about where the estimate stops being reliable. Read the privacy policy for what happens to your inputs, which is nothing.
